Seeing God’s care
Though remembering the past can bring a smile to my face or wrap me in sorrow, I am blessed by memory. O, it’s true I remember off-the-wall trivial things and multiple mathematical processes while forgetting to get an item from the store or run an errand but I still say blessed.
Looking back helps me see more visibly the hand of God at work. I’m certainly not pleased by my past mistakes and still wish I didn’t have to go through certain experiences, but God walked with me, sustained me, and carried me in my weakest moments.
Psalm 124 teaches the value of looking back and recognizing God on my side.
“If the Lord has not been on our side when men attacked us, when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive; the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away… Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 124: 2-5, 8
Living in the past is not where we need to camp out. Yet looking back to the past to see God’s provisional care may be just what we need to encourage us for today. Brothers and Sisters, God is on you side! Life is tough but God is tougher! Remember whom you belong to! God will see you though! Let’s stop in Isaiah before closing-
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” Isaiah 43: 1-3
Lord, you are my Sustainer! As I think back this morning, I remember time after time when you showed up and saw me through storm after storm. Thank you! I bless your name! Amen
