Saving America- 2 Chronicles 7
Election year has rolled around again. Time for political ads and primaries. Time for each candidate to bash the others and tell why their opponents are unworthy of the position while all the while highlighting why they are perfect for the job and how they will save this country. Many will get caught up in the whole election drama- debates, rallies, electioneering. So many are looking for a President to ride in and save America- to get pull us out of the recession, to reduce our debt of over $ 15,000,000,000,000 (15 trillion!), to reduce crime, to save Social Security, and on and on- a pretty big bill to fit!
Me? I don’t get caught up in all the hype and I don’t expect to find a president that will be the savior of America. Why? Are my expectations that low? Am I a pessimist? Apathetic? Not really- just realistic based on scripture. The future, success, stability, and health of our nation does not rest on the shoulders of the President but on the shoulders of Christians!!!
In chapter 7 of 2 Chronicles, God appeared to Solomon after he dedicated the temple. He reassured Solomon that he heard the prayer of dedication and would do all that Solomon asked. God told Solomon that when he shut up the heavens so that there was no rain or sent locust to eat the crops or sent a plague among the people- all actions meant to discipline and return Israel’s attention back to God when they strayed- that he would stand ready to heal their land on a few conditions. America has strayed far from the godly path she started on- crime and corruption are rampant, natural disasters hit one after another, the whole concept of politically correct and tolerance of everything except Christianity has Christians afraid to stand for what is right. We need a healing- not from the president but by the Lord himself- we need a savior but not just anyone will do, we need THE Savior! So what are the conditions required for healing?
“If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from THEIR wicked ways, then I WILL hear from heaven and WILL forgive their sin and WILL heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14, emphasis added
(side notes: 2 x 7 = 14, coincidence? I don’t think so!)
So do we just not give a care about who we elect as president? Certainly not the right attitude! Isaiah tells us that we will be held accountable for those we elect to have authority over us. I’m just saying the healing of our land won’t come from the next President or the one after that. The only healing for America comes from God when we as his people get on our knees then rise to stand up for what is right, live lives of integrity, and love this world as Jesus does- not judging or condemning but loving! THEN and only then will THE Savior save the day for America!
