riches & understanding
The morning finds me sipping coffee in my comfy chair in a home I love. Later the air conditioner will keep me quite comfortable as the temperatures soar to the very humid 90’s today. The pantry, refrigerator, and multiple freezers are stocked with an array of food options and clean drinking water waits the lifting of a lever while water already sits heated in a tank to provide a refreshing shower. Reliable vehicles are in the garage to provide transportation to wherever I chose to go with airplane tickets available for longer trips.
I confess I have a tendency to classify us as comfortable middle class. The wealthy are the ones in the big mansions with thousands to waste on frivolous purchases, not us. With this mindset I find it easier to read chapters like Psalm 49 as it speaks to rich people about relying on their money, after all the words are written to somebody else.
But then I must step back to get clarity. When I consider the population of the world. My economic standing as well as most in America pushes us to wealthy just because of the stable roof over my head, clean drinking water, and multiple vehicles. When I step back to get a better view I am reminded of the wealth God has blessed me with that I too often take for granted.
This clarity requires me to go back to reread Psalm 49 with greater purpose for I don’t want to rely on wealth but God. Check out this warning-
“Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. Though while he lived he counted himself blessed- and men praise you when you prosper- he will join the generation of his fathers who will never see the light of life. A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.” Psalm 49: 16-20
Father God, you have blessed me with a beautiful home and so many conveniences! First I thank you for such extravagance in giving me more than I will ever deserve. Second, I ask for greater understanding. I want to have a heart that honors you, a giving and serving heart to love others through the blessings you have given. Teach my heart. Keep my eyes focused on You. Amen
