praying for America

Our country stands on a precipice with the major decisions to be made in the next few months… decisions that will greatly effect the course of our nation. I wonder if those of us that are Christian have been properly preparing…

When I read of Absalom’s run for the throne, I thought of the candidates seeking the Oval Office. Though David loved his son Absalom dearly their relationship was rocky following Absalom’s successful plot to see his brother killed for the rape of his sister. Eventually Absalom got it in his head that he should be the next king and like… right then! He didn’t want to wait until his father’s death so he devised a plan.

Absalom started gathering supporters. He then started to rise early to go to the gates of the city where he would intercept people heading to the king to get help. He would basically tell the people the king didn’t care because the king had no one at the gate to lend aid. However… if he were king things would be better! Check out this politician laying it on thick…

“Whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absolom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.” 2 Samuel 15: 5-6

Absalom epitomizes all the negative characteristics we don’t like to see in a politician. He was sly, filled with false-humility, and deceitful as he acted like he truly cared for the people when all he wanted was the powerful position of king.

As I read of Absalom’s plot to rise to power, I thought of the candidates running for president. My words today are not meant to lift up one person over another or to sling mud in any one direction.

Instead my purpose is to send out a challenge to all Christians… myself included.

Are we praying for our nation? Are we praying for our current leaders? You don’t have to agree with them to pray that God uses them. Look back in the Old Testament… God did some mighty works for his people through pagan kings such as Nebuchadnezzar.

Are we praying for our next leader? Are we praying for whom we should vote? This is such an important decision and I NEED God to help guide my hand for I’m still at a loss for the direction to go.

Lord, I need your wisdom! I want your perfect will to be carried out. Guide me. Give me direction. I love our country- flaws and all- and I’m so thankful to you for blessing me with a nation that values freedoms. Yet I know we need your help in a major way so I pray for our land and for our leaders and for our people and I pay for the elections! In your name, Amen!

Thank you for this post. It is easy to feel we are hopeless to influence a change for good in our elections. I needed the reminder that God is still ultimately in charge, and we can appeal to him in prayer. Thank you.
