Loving Joseph

I would love to say I was very productive last evening but I don’t think I can. I did however enjoy the time as I finished up a wonderful book. A much better escape than movies or TV is a good Christian fiction novel and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. Now I’ll think of the stories and characters a little while then move on to the next book.

My approach with the Bible is different for I love to keep going back to read the same stories over and over and ponder over this precious Word of God. This morning, I’ve come to one of the most beautiful scenes in the Word as Joseph stands before his 11 brothers and reveals his identity to them. In Genesis 45, I’m reminded of 3 reasons why I favor Joseph above most Biblical characters.

One- Joseph was a man of integrity as he demonstrated through the trials he went through but also evidenced by the fact that the Egyptians loved him. (Gen 45:16)

Two- Joseph offered his brothers complete forgiveness… something undeserved because of their actions-

“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” Genesis 45:5

If ever there was a brother with reasons to hold a grudge, it was Joseph but he instead chose forgiveness even before the brothers could ask for it.

Three- I love how Joseph chose to see God’s hand at work through his brothers, the Potiphar event, and the prison years. My guess is that the stunned brothers were having a hard time comprehending that the brother they treated so treacherously was before them offering help and forgiveness for Joseph restated the essentials of verse 5 again-

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.” Genesis 45:8

I want to follow these 3 principles in my life today. I want to live a life marked by integrity in everything I do no matter how challenging. I want to offer the kind of forgiveness God so freely offers me so undeservedly. I want to see God’s hand at work in all I go through. I want to live with the godly perspective Joseph demonstrated over and over and bring glory to your name. Amen!
