God is worth the wait

Our dog is headed to the groomers this morning. While watching TV last night, Gary paused and asked me to remind him to take the dog. Some 30 minutes later, he asked me again. I told him he already asked me and yes, I would do so. Just a few minutes ago he left for the office but before he did he called for Scrappy. My only defense for my response is that I had only been out of bed a few moments. My question- ‘why are you taking the dog through the garage to go ‘out’?’ He reminded me of the groomer’s appointment. How quickly I forgot my assurance that I would remind him!

I’m so glad God doesn’t work on my level. He doesn’t forget his promises and he never fails to work out plans according to his will even if it takes years. One of the Christian leaders I follow on Twitter sent out a tweet over the weekend praising God for answering a 25 year old prayer. In Chronicles 34 we find another example.

In Josiah, God fulfilled a prophecy made some 300 years before his birth. After the death of Solomon, Israel split into 2 nations with David’s descendants ruling the Southern 2 tribes (Judah) and various men ruling the Northern 10 (Israel). Jeroboam was the first king of Israel. Out of fear his kingdom would fall because the people would return to David and the temple in Jerusalem, he created false gods and built altars for worship. God sent a prophet to speak out against the altar-

“A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who now make offerings here.” 1 Kings 13:2

Some 300 years later-

“[Josiah] burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purged Judah and Jerusalem.” 2 Chronicles 34:5

Josiah’s heart was set on honoring God and leading his people back to God. In this man with wholehearted devotion, God fulfilled a 300-year-old prophecy!

Lord, thank you for your faithfulness. You never forget a prophecy you sent nor any promise made. You hear the prayers of my heart and your respond with what is best and for your glory even if it takes years to see the result. You know I have prayers I’ve lifted up for years and I will continue to do so because I know you hear and you are at work. Help me to stay faithful and fully trust you in the wait. Amen
