Facing the Giants, Remember the Titans, Rocky, Hoosiers… I love the underdog movies. There’s something attractive about the courage shown when an underdog steps up to do their best unsure if it will be enough but willing to give it all anyway.
Over and over and in the Bible we find amazing stories of underdogs- David, Gideon, Joshua, Esther, and so on. Each faced giants whether literally or figuratively yet each one had a Help that is still ours today. They trusted God with their lives and the outcome.
In 2 Chronicles 13, we find a lesser-known underdog story. Solomon’s grandson, Abijah, was sitting on Judah’s throne while the pagan Jeroboam still wore the crown of Israel. In a war between the two, there was a battle where Judah was greatly outnumbered; Judah brought 400,000 troops and Israel 800,000.
Abijah stood on the mountain and called out to Israel to turn back to God reminding the people of God’s designs for sacrifice and worship led by Levitical priests. While Abijah spoke, Jeroboam was setting an ambush sending troops to the rear of Judah. When Judah realized their precarious position of being surrounded by troops double their number-
“They cried out to the Lord… At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.” 2 Chronicles 13: 14-15
The secret to their success wasn’t hidden. Though outnumbered and outmaneuvered, Judah was victorious by the might of God.
“The men of Israel were subdued on that occasion, and the men of Judah were victorious because they relied on the Lord, the God of their fathers.” 2 Chronicles 13:18
The victory came because they trusted in God. In the face of their enemy and in the heat of the battle, they may have had questions, fears, and doubts but God was bigger than their struggle.
The same holds true today. God is bigger than any battle we fight, bigger than every doubt we face, and bigger than every fear we struggle with. In the moments when the enemy seems to be winning, hold on! God is trustworthy and he is at work for us even when we can’t see his hand. When the battle is over, we will stand in victory not by our might but by the power of our God. The battle may wage on longer than we desire and our Help and victory may look different that we expect but it will come when we rely on God!
Lord, thank you for being my ever-present help and for being trustworthy! Now help me to place my full trust in you no matter what comes my way! Amen
