each day’s needs
As we get closer to the day our youngest will graduate high school and leave for college, I’m reflecting more often on our years of parenting. My, how I’ve grown on this journey! I look back and see some good decisions made and can easily spot the not-so-good ones too. Some of the things I got worked up over years ago seem so small from the perspective of time and from the lessons God is teaching me about trusting him. I’ve been a Christian through the whole parenting voyage but many have been the times I didn’t trust God as I should have.
Back in 1 Kings 8, Solomon dedicated the newly constructed temple to God. One of the charges he issued speaks volumes to my life-
“And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.” 1 Kings 8: 59-60
By relying on God to provide “each day’s need”, by trusting Him, we witness to others the truths of God. The questions I must ask are: Do I rely on God? Do I trust him with each day’s needs? Do I depend on his help and know he will come through even if it is in a way different from my expectations? As I read Solomon’s words, conviction fell heavy on me for if I as a Christian don’t trust God with each day then why would a non-Christian want to look God’s way?
Lord, forgive me! How often I’ve stressed, worried, and fretted over something (often something small) instead of trusting you! I shutter at the witness I’ve been of you to those around me! Help me, Jesus! Teach me to trust you for each day! May your light shine through me so that others will see you and know you are trustworthy! Amen!
