My act of Worship
I love the touching scene of Mary pouring expensive perfume on Jesus’ head. However I wonder if I would have marveled at the display of love and worship had I beheld it with my own eyes or if I would have been like the practical disciples who disapproved.
“When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. ‘Why this waste?’”- Matthew 26:8
They went on to mumble about how the perfume could have been sold for a high price and given to the poor. Jesus however shut them down with his next words-
“Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” – Matthew 26: 10
Three things about worship came to mind as I watched this scene unfold in my mind’s eye. Worship is personal, sometimes impractical, and may not be understood by others. Unfortunately our human nature tends to ridicule the things we don’t understand as demonstrated here by the disciples.
I’m also reminded by her actions that worship doesn’t just take place on Sunday mornings or in the House of God. Worship is a part of our everyday. The choices we make, the way we handle the challenges, the attitudes we display, the way we reach out to others… every word, deed, and thought can be given up as an act of worship to God. Paul wrote-
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17
Lord, I want to give you my best today! I want every part of my day to be my act of worship to you! Even if some people do not understand this desire… even some people in the church… I want to press on anyway. You are so very worthy of all my worship! Amen!
