The Christmas season is in full swing and I LOVE it! Christmas music! Christmas lights! Christmas shopping! Christmas parties & family gatherings on the calendar for later in the month! As far as shopping goes, I had some gifts before Thanksgiving then went out on Black Friday and picked up most of what remained. I think I’ down to one more gift!
When I was younger, I loved getting the gifts Santa was sure to bring. As I grew into a young adult, I still looked forward to the gifts as money was too tight to buy many non-essentials. When we became parents, I truly came to understand the great joy in giving. As I continue to age and watch my children grow into young adults, I find my greatest Christmas joys are having my family together and seeing them open the gifts selected just for them. Yes, opening gifts is still nice… just not the main focus anymore. Now if I could just help younger people realize this truth and not just at Christmas. I see so many working the long hours, doing all they can to get the jobs that pay the big bucks, and missing key moments with their children and families all so they can have more money thinking it will make them happy, successful, and accomplished. In Luke, Jesus said-
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
How timely that I would read these words just as the Christmas season kicks off. Lord, many of us across this land of plenty need this reminder. May we… May I be more people-focused, more giving-focused, and certainly more Christ-focused throughout this season and on into 2015! Amen!
