A Way devised
Happy Pi Day! Get it? March 14th… 3.14? For a math geek like me this is a totally awesome day to be celebrated with food, games, fun facts, and jokes!
Isn’t it great how God designs such variety into his creation! In me he placed a heart for all things numbers and patterns as well as a passion for learning that translates into me being totally geeked out today at school!
Now switching gears (especially for those of you who don’t get as excited about mathematics… yes, I’ve heard you exist though I can’t quite comprehend such an idea…)
I confess the fuel for my passion for learning burns most brightly in the pages of a book… and not just any book… not even a book on mathematics… but rather The book… the Bible!
Today God brought to light a verse I’ve read through before as part of the bigger story. Yet today this verse called me back and filled me with awe at the God of mercy who dearly loves us all!
Let me backtrack to set the stage. David’s son Amnon raped his half sister Tamar, daughter of the king and full-blooded sister of Absolom. After this horrifying evil, Tamar lived with her brother as a desolate woman. For 2 years, Absolom plotted his revenge until finally his brother was dead at his command. Knowing the king would not like his actions, Absolom fled to Geshur and stayed for 3 years.
Joab, commander of David’s army, decided to try to bring reconciliation between David and the son he loved. Joab coached a woman with words to say then sent her to the king acting as a widow seeking help for herself and her son. After David agreed to help the woman, her words became more challenge to David over the banishment of his son. After laying out her question, she said-
“Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.” 2 Samuel 14:14
In just under 2 weeks Christians will stop to remember the way God devised for us to not be estranged from him… a way that led to a cross lifted high just outside the city of Jerusalem… a way that led to a tomb cared out of a rocky landscape… a way that led out of the tomb and on up to heaven!
Already my heart is gearing up to celebrate the most beautiful name ever to be called out- Jesus!
Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!
Hundreds of years before Jesus, this woman spoke these words about a God who so loved people he didn’t want any of them to be banished or estranged from him. Yet this God so full of love and mercy is also a God of justice who will not and cannot allow sin to enter his presence. So the smaller ways God devised in the Old Testament (animal sacrifices, Ten Commandments, etc.) all led up to the Way walking out of heaven to tread the countryside of Galilee.
O, how my heart thrills and joy overflows at how my God loves us so much he devised a way for us not to be estranged from him! Christians- let us lift our hearts in praise today. Searchers- keep searching for the Way and he will be found by you. You don’t have to take my word for it because you will know it too.
Lord, thank you for The Way, The Truth, and The Life- my Jesus! Amen!
